Consultant Jim Jenkins, most recently of mini-major movie studio Lions Gate, is well-positioned to comment on the unfolding business of entertainment supply chain management.

Jenkins, currently consulting with the children's home video label Hits Entertainment (home to Barney, Thomas The Tank Engine, and Bob the Builder), has seen the importance of vendor-managed inventory (VMI) -- ensuring the right amount of stock is on hand, so that supply meets demand -- grow in importance in the operations of various retailers.

"Wal-Mart's competitors have taken notice of Wal-Mart's success," said Jenkins, who will be among the panelists at the Entertainment Supply Chain Academy on a session dedicated to VMI. The exchange of accurate data, collected at point-of-sale, between retailer and product suppliers, is key.

"VMI started before l997, prior to DVD's launch," Jenkins pointed out about the days of VHS sell-through. However, DVD's explosive growth required more sophisticated systems to keep up with the greater volumes, he added.
