Demantra, Inc. is a provider of retail planning, product replenishment and forecasting software. Among the users of Demantra’s Demand-Driven Planning solutions are several major Hollywood studio home entertainment divisions, including Sony, MGM and Fox.

John Bermudez, Demantra Vice President, Marketing, will be among the expert panelists speaking June 20 on the latest trends in vendor-managed inventory at the Entertainment Supply Chain Academy (ESCA). Bermudez gave a preview of what he will be talking about at the session.

Digital media such as movie DVDs, music CDs, and gaming products achieve most of their lifetime volume in the first few weeks after release, and it’s essential to accurately predict and manage demand to avoid either too few or too many items on the retail shelf. The challenge is compounded by rapidly changing assortments, decreasing prices over the product lifecycle, and store-specific merchandising.

“At the end of the day, DVD is largely a discretionary impulse buy. It’s all about merchandising,” said Bermudez, noting the importance for suppliers and retailers alike to optimize selling consumer opportunities at the store level, which produces “valuable POS data.”

Asked for recent trends in the entertainment space, Bermudez said, “Retailers are putting more focus on making the studios accountable for the entertainment sections of their stores.”

Demantra has responded to this trend with Demand-Driven Planning solutions focused on optimizing daily forecasts and replenishment at each store.

“Some stores will sell more than others,” Bermudez said, noting that merchandise mixes must take into account the demographics of the store’s area.

In contrast to the movie studios, Bermudez has observed that “video game publishers are newer to this” [level of sophistication] in terms of trying to figure out in advance how well as title will do sales-wise.
