Bhanu transitioned into media technology from software engineering when she joined Panasonic Hollywood Lab (PHL) in the beginning of 2002. At PHL, as part of the core R&D team that developed and evolved the Blu-ray format, she was involved in various aspects of Blu-ray technology for last six years; starting from pre-conception stage through format standardization, building authoring tools and developing BD-Java titles and for the last two and half years involved in establishing Panasonic’s Blu-ray title production division.

Bhanu spearheaded PHL’s Blu-ray authoring group during the startup phase of the production, hiring and training the newly recruited staff. In that role, she led the development of asset delivery specification, pre-qualification procedures, authoring/programming practices and QC methodologies. She also programmed some of the first advanced BD-J applications. And as Manager of Technology Integration at PHL’s R&D division her role included overseeing advanced title and tool development to help realize PHL’s goal of exposing the unrealized capabilities of the format. In that role she interfaced with studios and creative teams on title architecture/implementation, interfaced with encryptors and replicators on BD-ROM production matters and with various player companies on compatibility issues.

And in the last year, as a faculty at Javelin’s HDTC, Bhanu co-developed targeted curriculum for various entities in Blu-ray Production chains to help them transition from DVD to Blu-ray. She conducts training seminars for studios, producers, authors/programmers for Javelin while being actively involved in development of BD-Live titles and establishment of BD-Live production workflow at PHL.

With DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group since its formation in 1997, Amy Jo Smith serves as executive director of the industry-supported trade coalition dedicated to advancing home entertainment products and exploring other digital entertainment products. Under her leadership, the DEG is credited with helping to make DVD the fastest growing consumer electronics product in industry history.

Smith is responsible for managing the trade association and marketing DVD, Blu-ray Disc and digital entertainment on behalf of the Hollywood studios, music companies and leading consumer electronics manufacturers. Smith is responsible for administration and the marketing and public relations of the group including media relations, trade outreach and collateral materials.

Under Smith’s leadership, the DEG membership base has grown to include more than 60 leading companies in the home entertainment space. As part of their work, they engage regular dialogue with the DEG Retail Advisory Board including mass merchants, regional, online, e-tailers, rental chains and independent retailers. The DEG also has a comprehensive initiative aimed at bettering eco-friendly practices of home entertainment products.

In 2007, Smith was the recipient of the Visionary Award presented by Home Media Magazine and Hollywood Reporter. She was given the industry’s top honor for her tireless efforts for evangelizing home entertainment products. Smith was listed in Video Business’ Women Elite in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Prior to joining the DEG, Smith served a brief tenure as communications advisor for the Clinton White House. She also worked on the Clinton for President campaign in 1992. She was an aide to Los Angeles Mayor Dick Riordan, Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro and Los Angeles School board president Mark Slavkin.

Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Pennsylvania.
