Matthew leads Deloitte’s EMEA Digital Strategy practice. After a couple of years messing about with lasers, Matthew started his proper career in the mobile industry as part of a well-funded, but short lived attempt to disrupt the traditional media industry. Having tried and failed to convince members of the public that they preferred watching Belgian Second Division to Big Brother, thought Second Life was better than Facebook and would rather listen to music in 8 bit mono, he jumped ship and started helping media companies make the most of technology.

Since then, Matthew’s clients have included some of the biggest brands in global media and technology. He has worked with companies in locations as diverse as India, Kenya and Japan and has been part of digital business launches in every continent except Antarctica. In addition to his client work, Matthew is the author of Deloitte’s Digital Leadership series on the organisation and culture of digital businesses and leads and authors the annual Media Consumer survey, now in its eighth year.

In my previous role I led SPE’s Worldwide Networks Systems (Traditional, Non-Linear & OTT). In this role I provided the strategic direction and oversight of the overall business systems portfolio from broadcast management systems to supporting digital media workflows (excluding technical operations/consumer delivery).

I have also led SPE’s intellectual property program (title & metadata management, rights, clearances and music), worldwide product fulfilment systems as well as television sales, marketing and distribution systems. Initiatives included B2B system development, rights management, Sales and Avails enhancements, Media DR, Digital Distribution Metadata, Universal Media ID – ISAN & EIDR, Clip Licensing & Stock Footage, JBoss / Open source initiative, Physical Logistics Automation, and the Digital Backbone.

Prior to system management, I led SPE IT’s strategic planning group support the CIO. In this role I led: SPE’s Digital Media Initiative, IT strategic plan, Portal & Content Management Strategy, Offshore Outsourcing transformation (India), Master Data Management Strategy, Business Intelligence Strategy, and Data Center Strategy.

Before Joining SPE, I worked at Accenture on strategy, software development & change management.

He has been involved with streaming media on the web for the last decade with a strong focus on client-side development and wrote many of the early connection frameworks that still drive much of the traffic flowing over Akamai today, including OVP, HDCore and OSMF. He has a current focus on MPEG DASH and HTTP delivery, mobile media, connected devices and security.
